The transformation of Roncesvalles Avenue seems to be coming to a close.
There are signs everywhere that the old school of thought is being challenged by the next generation of urban design and complete street philosophies.
The Roncy / High park area of Toronto is blanketed with quiet side streets that extend north to Bloor st and south to the lakeshore. With High Park to the west and Brockton and Parkdale to the east it is becoming a coveted and culturally diverse community of citizens who are aware that the bicycle is a useful tool to get from A to B.
Along with the installation of benches and greenery, wider sidewalks, improved on street parking and bike humps (to make the transitions around parked cars and streetcars easier,) I have been spotting signs of the next generation of cyclists mimicking their changing environment.
Learning lessons about increasing traffic safety through increased bicycle, driver and pedestrian awareness can be a part of every community in Toronto.
Our future looks brighter, we just have to make it over the humps.
